EVANSVILLE, IND. – Evansville Regional Airport (EVV) is partnering with Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) and local agencies to host its First Annual Sensory Storytime and Disability Resource Fair, aimed at connecting families to accessible resources on Nov. 18 inside the airport terminal.
"The event is designed to provide a one-stop shop for families and individuals looking to explore available resources– whether resources that can be used now or as part of future planning," says Leslie Fella, EVV Director of Marketing and Air Service Development. "We are delighted to host an abundant, diversified portfolio of participating agencies and businesses, who are eager to connect with local families."
The free resource fair and sensory story time will be held at EVV from 8a-10a CDT with EVPL’s sensory storytime at 9a CDT. The morning’s festivities also include meet and greets with the airport’s inaugural certified therapy dog Crypto.
“Crypto has made such a positive impact on our passengers, elevating the EVV customer experience from great to even greater,” says Fella. “We felt this was an ideal opportunity to introduce Crypto to families who are planning upcoming travel or who simply may need a little ‘puppy love,’ showing them first-hand in a more private setting, the comfort and calm our therapy dog program can add to their travel journey.”
Fella said the idea for the event and its offerings was a direct result of EVV’s new For EVVeryone Accessibility Advisory Committee, which is comprised of several local accessibility-centered agencies, businesses and partners, including parents of children with disabilities. The committee is designed to educate, guide and ultimately expand accessibility at the airport, making the airport and its events more accommodating for everyone. While the airport has a long-standing partnership with EVPL to facilitate monthly airport storytimes, the new sensory storytime and resource fair is the first of its kind at EVV.
“Diversity is strength, and when we listen, learn and celebrate what is both common and different, we become a wiser, more inclusive and accommodating airport,” says Fella. “This is everyone’s airport, and our new accessibility programs just like this one we’re announcing today, are intended for everyone. We want every guest, every passenger, every event attendee who arrives at EVV to have a pleasant experience.”
The Sensory Storytime and Disability Resource Fair will provide information about community resources and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. Community vendors will be available to discuss services and resources, along with some interactive areas. Registration is not required for attendance.
